Preparing your Home

  • Turn on all the lights
  • Open all the curtains.
  • Note: The best time to videotape is in the morning or during the day when the in sun is out. Make sure your house/apartment has plenty of light.
  • Suggestion: Make sure there no other people or pets in your home while your taping the video. If you have any personal items that are of value, for example, pictures/ paintings/jewelry etc….please remove or do not film them in the video.
Preparing your Camera
  • Find a suitable Mini-DV, 8mm, Hi8mm, Digital 8, VHS camera or any recording device.
  • Charge the battery fully.
  • Keep the camera lens at its widest angle and leave it there!
Shooting the Video
  • Go outside to the front of the house/apartment.
  • Get as far away from the property as needed to include it all (you may need to shoot from the street.)
  • Start shooting the outside view of the property and walk toward the front door.
  • If its an apartment building videotape the lobby as well and then start shooting again from the door to your apartment.
VERY IMPORTANT POINTERS
  • Try to keep the camera Steady while taping.
  • Do NOT pause the video to go to another room, the whole idea is to show viewers the Layout of the property and rooms.
  • Do NOT concentrate on the kitchen cabinets, light fixtures or bathrooms.
  • Again, the idea is just to show viewers the layout and what the property looks like in GENERAL.
  • Try to minimize shooting directly at windows as they will momentarily 'fool' the camera's auto exposure feature into shooting the room 'darker' than you want.
  • Also, don’t shoot directly into the mirror which will show your reflection.
